The 30th anniversary of the withdrawal of Russian troops from Central and Eastern Europe was commemorated at the NATO headquarters

On October 21, 2024, the Permanent delegation of the Republic of Lithuania to NATO, together with the Permanent delegations of the Republic of Estonia, the Republic of Latvia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and the Federal Republic of Germany, organized a joint discussion and a photo exhibition to commemorate 30 years after the withdrawal of Russian troops from Central and Eastern Europe.

"This event marked a historical turning point, one of the most important moments of the end of the Cold War and the end of the consequences of the Soviet occupation. I am certain that Russia will also have to withdraw its troops from the illegally occupied territories of Ukraine and Georgia" said Deividas Matulionis, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Lithuania to NATO.

On August 31, 1994, the last units of the Russian army left Germany, Estonia, and Latvia. In 1991 Russian troops left Czechoslovakia and Hungary, and in 1993 - Lithuania and Poland. This process contributed significantly to the restoration of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the countries in the region and led to a significant step towards the pursuit of NATO memberships.

Photographs for the exhibition were provided by the Lithuanian Central State Archives. The authors of the photographs are Vladimiras Gulevičius, Viktoras Kapočius, Eugenijus Masevičius, Paulius Lileikis.
