Sixth rotation of Ghowr PRT solemnly deployed to Afghanistan
On October 29 Deployment ceremony of PRT-6 to peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan took place in Freedom Square in Panevezys. Team of 140 soldiers will be deployed to Afghanistan. The ceremony was attended by the National Defence Minister Juozas Olekas, Mayor of Panevezys Vytas Matuzas, Lithuanian Armed Forces Commander Gen. Maj. Valdas Tutkus, interim Land Force Commander Col. Vytautas Zukas, representatives of Panevezys district leadership, and families of the soldiers. The sixth rotation was formed on the basis of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Motorised Infantry Brigade “Iron Wolf” King Mindaugas Motorised Infantry Battalion. The sixth rotation of PRT also includes members from Logistic Forces, Military Medicine Service, Air Force and Juozas Vitkus Engineering Battalion. Commander of King Mindaugas Motorised Infantry Battalion Lieutenant Colonel Albertas Kondrotas was nominated commander of PRT-6. The team will leave for Afghanistan in the beginning of November. PRT-6 will be joined by a Georgian member, military surgeon. He will be looking after healthcare of the PRT-6 soldiers along with six military medics from Lithuania and two Ukrainians (a surgeon and an anaesthesiologist). Danish, Georgian, American, Croatian, Ukrainian soldiers and civilians from Lithuania and Iceland will work in Ghowr, Afghanistan, together with the Lithuanian military. Lithuanian-led PRT mission was launched in June 2005. Among its key tasks are extending authority of central government in the province, ensuring security, and creating environment for provincial reconstruction. PRT is military-civil mission lead by Lithuania under the NATO International Security Assistance Force.
