Nuclear security centre of excellence was opened at the Lithuanian border guard school in Medininkai

Supporting international efforts to secure all vulnerable nuclear materials and increase nuclear security worldwide as it was called for by the US President Barack Obama in Prague in 2009, and reiterated by the Heads of States at 2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Summit, on the 12 March 2012 the Government of Lithuania took decision to established the Nuclear Security Centre of Excellence (NSCOE).

On 1 April 2012 the Centre was established as a separate division with its own statute at the Lithuanian Border Guards School in Medininkai. The official opening ceremony of the NSCOE took place on 4 June 2012.

VISION

 

The NSCOE will strive to become an efficient and reliable partner of the U.S. specialized institutions and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).The NSCOE will also serve as the capacity building and training venue for Lithuanian institutions responsible for the prevention, detection, response and investigation of nuclear and radiological smuggling.The NSCOE has aspirations to become regional in the future, firs of all accommodating Nordic-Baltic potential and providing training and exchange of best practices for all interested countries.

ACTIVITIES

The NSCOE will:

         focus on organising trainings, specialised seminars and simulation exercises in the field of countering nuclear smuggling;

         facilitate and promote the cooperation between the national institutions combating the smuggling of the nuclear and other radioactive materials;

         carry out and maintain the international cooperation with IAEA, Interpol, other international organizations and foreign partners in the area of nuclear security.
