New Trust Fond Projet for Georgia

Documents for the Trust Fund Project to Provide Explosive Remnants of War Clearance and Medical Rehabilitation Support to Georgia were signed on Friday, 12 March at the premises of the Lithuanian Delegation to NATO in Brussels.   The Trust Fund will be co-led by three NATO nations: the Czech Republic, Estonia and Lithuania. The Project was initiated by Lithuania together with Estonia and Latvia after NATO received a request from Georgia following the conflict in August 2008 to help eliminate the explosive remnants of war and rehabilitate the injured. The Project is destined to equip and train a company of Explosive Ordnance Disposal specialists within the Georgian Armed Forces, and to establish a Medical Rehabilitation centre in a military hospital in Gori.                                                   The Project will be implemented by NATO Maintenance and Supply Agency (NAMSA) and will be funded by willing contributing nations – NATO members and partners.   Lithuanian Ambassador to NATO Mr. Linas Linkevičius appraised the Trust Fund as a very important instrument for NATO-Georgia practical cooperation. Deputy Prime Minister, State Minister on European and Euro Atlantic Integration of Georgia Mr. Giorgi Baramidze and the Deputy Secretary General of NATO Mr. Claudio Bisogniero were also present at the signing ceremony and thanked the Lead Nations for this important initiative.
