NATO SG Jaap de Hoop Scheffer meets Lithuanian ambassadors
On 15-16 March in Brussels Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas and the heads of Lithuanian diplomatic representations in the Commonwealth of Independent States with EU and NATO officials are discussing the EU and NATO priorities and sharing experience on the EU and NATO activities in the CIS. Special attention is paid to the issues of energy, visa policy, as well as the reforms of defence and economic systems of CIS States.
On 15 March during the informal consultations in Brussels the heads of Lithuanian diplomatic representations in the CIS States met with NATO’s Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, Deputy Minister of Defence of Georgia Batu Kutelia and NATO’s high-ranking officials.
During the meetings Lithuania’s active and significant role of encouraging NATO’s cooperation with Eastern European countries was stressed and the issues of NATO enlargement, relations with partners and further development of the Alliance were discussed.
“The success of Lithuanian Eastern Policy is determined by the capability to act in the West, especially in NATO and the EU Headquarters in Brussels,” emphasized the Head of Lithuanian Diplomacy P.Vaitiekūnas.
On 16 March the meeting of P.Vaitiekūnas with the EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson is also to be held in Brussels.
