Lithuanian Special Operations Unit soldiers started mission in southern Afghanistan
On August 1 troops of the Lithuanian Special Operation Unit Squadron “Aitvaras” started one-year NATO International Security Assistance Force mission in southern Afghanistan. Soldiers of the Special Forces along with soldiers from other NATO countries will be conducting special surveillance, terrorist identification, arrest and neutralisation, and other high-intensity combat tasks. Political and military leadership decided to send the Lithuanian Special Operations Unit (SOU) to the south Afghanistan mission in February 2007. Lithuanian Special Operations Unit Squadron will be participating in the ISAF-led mission for the first time. Soldiers of SOU already participated and gained experience in the USA-led counterterrorist operation “Enduring Freedom” in Afghanistan in 2002-2004. |
