Lithuanian soldiers help computerise administrative institutions of Ghowr province
Soldiers of the Lithuanian-led Ghowr Reconstruction Team (PRT-5) implemented another quick impact project on July 31 by donating a computer set with printer for Ghowr Department of Education. And yesterday two more similar sets were given to the office of provincial governor and one delivered to the Department of National Defence. The equipment was handed over by the PRT-5 Commander Col. Dalius Polekauskas, Head of PRT-5 CIMIC Department Major Liutauras Mickevicius, and Head Assistant of the Lithuanian Special Mission Mindaugas Simonaitis. Among the goals of the Lithuanian-led PRT is strengthening administrative capabilities. Quick impact project of computer equipment purchasing was completed in order to ease working conditions of the mentioned institutions and impel successful operation in the province. The following week another computer-printer set will be delivered to the Chaghcharan radio station. In total five computer-printer sets were bought on PRT funding, full sum amounts to 15 thousand litas. “Personnel of many authority institutions still fill documents by hand. The donation will not only facilitate work efficiency but also boost computer literacy. Courses were arranged for the workers who will use computers, they will also be able to ask expert assistance,” Officer Maj. L.Mickevicius commented help for local governmental institutions. Province of Ghowr under Lithuania’s responsibility is one of the biggest and poorest regions of Afghanistan. International and non-governmental organisations are expected to proliferate in the province as UNAMA has opened its office in Chaghcharan recently. Presence of organisations would contribute to provincial reconstruction and encourage local residents to intensify joining reconstruction of their homeland through undertaking various projects. Lithuanian-led PRT started its mission in Ghowr in June 2005. Its main goal is helping Afghan government extend its authority in the province, to ensure security and to create conditions for provincial development. PRT is a Lithuanian-led Civil-Military Mission under the NATO ISAF. Special Mission of the Republic of Lithuania operates in Afghanistan along with the PRT-5, it is staffed with National Defence, Foreign Affairs and Domestic ministries’ representatives, and diplomats and experts from abroad.
