Lithuanian soldiers donate sound equipment for Ghowr mosques

Lithuanian soldiers in Ghowr bought and handed over sound equipment for Ghowr mosques on September 6. It was one of quick impact projects conducted to support local community. 65 loudspeakers, microphones, batteries and other equipment was bought for 33 thousand litas.

PRT-5 Head of Civil and Military Cooperation Department Major Liutauras Mickevicius stressed while handing over the equipment to Mohammad Shah Majedi, Pilgrimage and Hajj Department Director, that PRT is very happy about the chance to improve security environment and to help people gather for a common prayer.

“Currently security condition in Ghowr is stable therefore we are happy to supply the mosques with the sound system that is very important for calling people together for a collective prayer,” Major L.Mickevicius said during the ceremony.

It is not the first time the Lithuanian-led PRT supports mosques in the province - it has already made donations of carpets and Koran books. Danish and Croatian soldiers serving in the Lithuanian PRT bought sound equipment for mosques in their patrol districts.

Local people perceive support for mosques as tolerance and respect for their religion and traditions, and local mullahs are very influential in shaping customs of people’s daily life and their attitude towards possible change in their life quality. What mullahs say is customarily embraced as truth therefore close cooperation between the highest mullahs and the PRT is one of the main ways of conveying the message of the PRT goals and objectives for the locals and to build their positive attitude towards the PRT activity.

“I am particularly thankful for the PRT members for the understanding and support they always lend us. Loudspeakers are crucial for the mosques. Now people will be able to hear our call for the prayer,” Mohammad Shah Majedi thanked the soldiers.

Lithuanian-led PRT started its mission in June 2005. Its main goal is helping Afghan government extend its authority in the province, to ensure security and to create conditions for provincial development.

PRT is a Lithuanian-led Civil-Military Mission under the NATO ISAF.
