On 27 April during the informal meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of NATO members in Oslo Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk.
During the bilateral meeting the Ministers positively assessed the meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Commission, during which the important issues of Ukrainian domestic policy were presented along with the achievements of the reform implementation and further guidelines for active cooperation between the Alliance and Ukraine were defined.
Minister P.Vaitiekūnas stressed the significance of the public diplomacy, in informing the society of Ukraine about the issues of the Euro-Atlantic integration. The Head of Lithuanian diplomacy assured his Ukrainian counterpart that Vilnius is prepared to continue sharing its experience in this area.
Ukrainian Minister A.Yatsenyuk stressed that he assessed positively the opportunity to take part in NATO operation in Afghanistan joining the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT). Ukrainian medical officer is to join the Lithuanian-led PRT in Afghanistan in May of this year already.
Lithuanian and Ukrainian Ministers of Foreign Affairs also discussed the current political situation in Ukraine and further steps to develop the bilateral cooperation. Special attention was paid to the energy issues. Minister P.Vaitiekūnas stressed the cooperation possibilities, when the countries shall guarantee the alternative ways of electricity provision.
Lithuanian and Ukrainian Ministers of Foreign Affairs also discussed the cooperation between Ukraine and the EU. P.Vaitiekūnas expressed his conviction that the negotiations on the new enhanced EU agreement with Ukraine shall be quick and successful, irrespective of the domestic political situation in Ukraine.
The Ministers also exchanged their opinions about the situation in Transnistria. Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs P.Vaitiekūnas highlighted the importance of the positive role of Ukraine aiming at settling the Transnistrian conflict. |
