D. Matulionis presented his letters of credence to NATO Secretary General

On 24 April, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Lithuania to NATO Ambassador Deividas Matulionis presented his credentials to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

After the ceremony, the Ambassador and Secretary General discussed most pressing issues on NATO’s current agenda, including ongoing Alliance adaptation to ever-changing security environment, further strengthening deterrence and defence, and NATO’s role in response to COVID-19 pandemic.

“Understandably, current focus is on the mitigation on the COVID-19 pandemic, but we must not forget other relevant threats. Credible deterrence and defence remains NATO‘s core task. Implementation of NATO member nations leaders’ decisions, pertaining to reinforcement, provision of necessary capabilities, air defence and update of defence plans, is of high importance. At the same time, Lithuania remains committed to further investing into national defence capabilities, participating in NATO‘s operations and missions, and contributing to strengthening of the Alliance,” said ambassador D. Matulionis.

Lithuania’s representative also mentioned that NATO’s “open door policy” has to remain credible. NATO needs to maintain strong support to closest partners and aspirants, such as Georgia and Ukraine.

Lithuania became a full-fledged member of NATO on 27 March 2004. Deividas Matulionis is the 5th Permanent Representative of the Republic of Lithuania to NATO after Lithuania’s accession to the Alliance.
